About The Writer's Black Book
Practical Guidance for Serious Storytellers
The Writer’s Black Book was created with a straightforward purpose: to help fiction writers understand how stories work and give them practical tools for making their own stories stronger.
Writing advice is everywhere. The difficulty is often knowing which advice matters, why a particular technique works, and when it should be used.
The Writer’s Black Book takes a more practical approach.
Rather than treating storytelling as a collection of rules and formulas, it examines the individual elements that make fiction work: character, plot, dialogue, tension, structure, pacing and the many decisions that connect them.
The aim is not to tell writers what their stories should be.
It is to give them a better understanding of the craft so they can make those decisions for themselves.
The Books
A Growing Library of Fiction-Writing Guides
At the heart of The Writer’s Black Book is The Writer’s Black Book Series, a growing collection of focused guides to the craft of fiction.
The series begins with The Foundation Quartet, four books addressing some of the most fundamental challenges facing fiction writers: suspense and tension, dialogue, character creation and plotting.
Each volume is designed to work independently while also forming part of a wider practical reference library.
Future books will explore other aspects of storytelling in greater depth, building a collection writers can return to whenever a manuscript presents a new problem.
About Jim Moore
Writer, Editor and Creator of The Writer's Black Book
Jim Moore has spent much of his professional life working with words.
With a Master’s degree in Technical Writing and Communication and extensive experience as an editor, proofreader, copywriter and book formatter, he has worked on more than 150 books that have gone on to publication.
That experience provided an unusual perspective on writing.
Working closely with manuscripts means seeing not only what succeeds on the page, but also the problems that repeatedly prevent otherwise promising writing from working as effectively as it could. Structure loses direction. Characters lack sufficient motivation. Dialogue communicates information without revealing character. Scenes exist without changing the story. Good ideas become difficult to sustain across an entire manuscript.
The Writer’s Black Book grew from an interest in those practical problems.
The objective is not to prescribe a single method of writing fiction. Different writers work in different ways, and different stories demand different solutions.
Instead, Jim’s approach is to examine the mechanics beneath effective storytelling, explain them clearly and turn them into techniques writers can understand, adapt and apply to their own work.
Better Tools. Better Decisions. Better Stories.
There is no single formula for writing a successful novel.
But understanding the craft gives writers more control over the choices they make.
Alongside the books, The Writer’s Black Book will continue to develop articles, practical resources and focused guidance for writers who want to understand their craft more deeply.
Whether you’re planning a first novel, struggling with a manuscript that isn’t quite working, or simply looking to sharpen a particular aspect of your writing, the objective remains the same:
Practical tools. Clear explanations. Better storytelling.
